In 1980 V.M.Myasishchev Design Bureau created aircraft VM-T "Atlant" intended for transportation of large cargoes on external mounting located under the fuselage. Atlant"s fuselage was reinforced and equipped with two-fin tail unit and automatic control system. The first flight took place on April 29th, 1981.
