During the 1973 war the IDF managed to capture the newest Soviet MBT of the time - the T-62. These tanks were commissioned in large numbers by the IDF after installing a standard IDF communication system and other equipment. The original 115mm smooth-bore canon and automatic cartridge discharger mounted originally on the T-62 by the Soviets was not replaced. The IDF calls the T-62 'Tiran 6'.
