The first Soviet nuclear-powered submarine equipped with ballistic missiles "K-19" (NATO code - Hotel class), accepted into military service on November, 12th, 1960. With the purposes of reduction of terms of designing and building of the new ship, it was created on the basis of earlier "K-3" (NATO code - November class). As a result of such conciliatory proposal it was possible to place on submarine only three D-2 launch systems with surface start. Further 7 more boats of this class have been constructed. The infamous popularity has received to first "K-19" because of numerous accidents on its board 36 persons were lost. Among sailors it has received a nickname "Hiroshima".
