The correct military designation of this weapon is SO-122 but it is commonly known as the 2S1 Gvozdika (Carnation). It entered service with the Soviet and Polish armies in 1971 and was first seen in public during a parade held in Poland in July 1974. The 2S1 shares many automative components with the MT-LB multipurpose tracked armoured vehicle.It is estimated that over 10000 2S1 were built for the domestic and export markets. Thousands 2S1 are still in use by many armies of the world including all ex-USSR, ex-Yugoslavia and Warsaw Pact countries, Iraqi, Angola, Finland, Syriam, Lybia and much more.
