Aside from the new turret and lengthened hull, the components of the T-62 were close to T-55 components in the same time frame...T-55 replacement was developed by a new design team under Kartsev of the Uralvagonzavod in Nizhni Tagil. Stretching the T-55 hull allowed the turret diameter to be extended from 1845mm to 2245mm to better accommodate the recoil of a more powerful U-5T (2A20) Rapira smoothbore 115mm tank gun. The gun had two axis stabilization using the new "Meteor" system. Aside from the new turret and lengthened hull, the components of the T-62 were close to T-55 components in the same time frame. A total of 25 trials tanks were built in 1961 and full scale series production began in July 1962. |
