The Pak 38 was the first gun to lift the anti-tank gun out of the tiny two-man class into the realm of full-sized artillery. Although developed by Rheinmetall-Borsing from 1938, the gun was not available for the campaigns of the 1940 but was issued later in that year to replace the 37mm Pak 36. Heavier weapons eventually supplanted the 50mm gun, but it was never completely replaced in large numbers remained in service throughout the war. In postwar years several guns were used by Bulgarian Army.
