This book tells about the successful offensive operation of the Red Army at the southern flank of Soviet-German front in January-February 1943. There was a kind of competition for liberating the larger Soviet territory between the two fronts, namely the South-western front led by Vatutin and Voronezhsky front headed by Golikov. Even after the Battle of Stalingrad the German forces had enough strength and had been regrouped for a counterattack in the vicinity of Kharkov.
